🐚 Mother of pearl (nacre) is a natural material that is obtained from the shells of mollusks of the genus Pinctada (the very ones where pearls are formed).⠀It has a peculiar appearance, iridescent "play" in the light.⠀It is used to make collar buttons and bones (collar stays), cufflink inserts, tie clips and other decorations.⠀Mother-of-pearl buttons are supplied with both shirts and blouses, as well as vests, jackets, cardigans.⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
🪸 For the manufacture of buttons, not only pearl shells are used, although some of the most beautiful are obtained from the shells of the Polynesian mollusk, which brings black pearls.⠀Most are made from the cone-shaped seashells of troca.⠀The best shells are found off the coast of Australia and south of New Guinea.⠀Yellow mother-of-pearl buttons come from the Solomon Islands and Burma.⠀Up to 30% of the world's raw materials are mined in Egypt, but the shells of the Red Sea have a yellowish-brown tint.⠀Beautiful buttons are cut from the shell of a green sea snail that lives near New Guinea, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines.⁣⁣⠀
A good button has an even color, iridescent tints of mother-of-pearl are clearly visible in it, and its thickness is at least 2 mm.⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
How to distinguish mother-of-pearl from plastic❓⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
1️⃣ The easiest way is to attach a button or other item to your face (cheek).⠀Unlike plastic, mother-of-pearl will feel cold.⁣⁣⠀
2️⃣You can look at the button from different angles - if you see beautiful iridescent overflows, most likely it is made of mother-of-pearl.⁣⁣⠀
3️⃣Another, the most radical way is to “bite” a button.⠀Mother-of-pearl is very hard to "bite", plastic is less hard.⠀On the other hand, using this method, a beginner, unfamiliar with mother-of-pearl, may draw an erroneous conclusion.
