PDF, Traditional Hap Shawl, knitting pattern, hand knitting, Old Shale pattern, 2ply jumper yarn, 50" square

This is a PDF Traditional Hap Shawl knitting pattern. This beautiful hap shawl is knitted with a 2ply Shetland jumper yarn from Jamieson & Smith, in the traditional Old Shale pattern. The yarn is a pure wool and lambswool mix to keep you warm. The pattern is fairly easy and is laid out with fully explained abbreviations, written instructions and graphs. It would be suited to a beginner looking to move on to intermediate rated patterns. I designed this pattern and named it after my lovely elderly neighbour, Mary, who is 90 years old and still going strong! Please note I have followed the traditional Shetland shawls layout of this pattern. Measurements: Approx 50" square after blocking. Hand wash, squeeze excess water out gently, and dry flat or block out fully (recommended). Front page as image above, second page details below: Please read the following notes: 1. The gauge is not important as every knitter’s tension is different and the shawl is usually blocked out to a specific size, using the yarns suggested, or as close to it as possible. Alternatively, and to be on the safe side, if you know your knitting is tight use a bigger size needle. Or if your knitting is loose, use a smaller needle. Otherwise use the needles suggested. 2. The main part of the shawl is knitted on No. 10 (4.5mm) needles 80cm length of circular needles. 3. The complete sequence for each round is REPEATED 4 TIMES in all throughout. 4. The abbreviations are taken from old Shetland shawl patterns and my own interpretations, and with a little practice these are easier to work with. The modern instructions are also given as listed below.
