The picture conveys the famous historical plot. Prince Vladimir (in the near future the prince of Kievan Rus) wanted to marry Rogneda but was refused by her father because of his birth or other political goals. Then Vladimir treacherously attacked Polotsk, destroying all her relatives, and took the princess as his wife.
In the foreground, the artist depicted Rogneda in a semi-conscious state. She sits with her arms spread wide. Her face expresses bitterness, pain from the loss of loved ones, and emptiness. Vladimir bent over her, pressing his hand to his heart. He repents his deed and asks her forgiveness.
