About Phum Dzi
This category features ancient Phum dZi (say it like Püm with the H being silent). Beads are typically decorated with the longevity or net design. The word Phum probably derives from the Tibetan word for vase, which may also be spelt Büm (as in Bümpa). A ritual vase (Tib:gtso-bum) is used to confer Vajrayana empowerments and represents the mandala of the deity. The long life or nectar vase (Tib: tshe bum) is believed to bestow longevity. Phum dZi are usually fat beads with a grey to black base colour. They can also vary greatly in quality and size. Many Tibetans believe they are the oldest of all the dZi beads found in Tibet. Some rare Phum dZi may even include eyes and other motifs
Dzi bead (Tib. གཟི།; pronounced "zee"; alternative spelling: gzi) is a type of stone bead of uncertain origin worn as part of a necklace and sometimes as a bracelet. In several Asian cultures, including that of Tibet, the bead is considered to provide positive spiritual benefit.
The meaning of the Tibetan word "Dzi" translates to "shine, brightness, clearness, splendour". The beads originate in the Tibetan cultural sphere and can command high prices and are difficult to come by. They are found primarily in Tibet, but also in neighbouring Bhutan, Ladakh and Sikkim. Shepherds and farmers pick them up in the grasslands or while cultivating fields. Because dZi are found in the earth, Tibetans cannot conceive of them as man-made. Since knowledge of the bead is derived from oral traditions, few beads have provoked more controversy concerning their source, method of manufacture and even precise definition. Thi
