Here’s an oldie, with a story. I painted it from under the 1 train on 10th Avenue, soon after we moved back to New York in 2013. For some reason I was self conscious about setting up behind my easel there. I wanted to be inconspicuous. So I sat on the ground under a streetlamp. I learned that while it can be done, the ground gets really cold and it’s really awkward to try to hold a large-ish canvas between your knees and not get paint all over yourself. I’ve always enjoyed thinking about it when I look at it. I’m sending it off today, hopefully the new owners will find the back-story amusing. Here’s my latest effort at my E 10th street commission, painted Thursday and Friday. My struggle has been to feature the clients old building building (on the right) and the Russian Baths, and have the light and everything else come together. Happy to report that both the painter and client are pleased with this one. Will I continue to paint on this block? A largish painting of Katz’s and the raking mid-day light on Ludlow street. Knowing the light was moving fast and that it would all be in shadow soon (third pic) I went all shorthand; cursory indications of figures, windows and cast shadows. The point of painting from life is, after all, to do something that feels alive. A few days ago the weather was like today, cold and rainy, and I had 3 hours in front of me. Then the parking gods opened up this space. I have always wondered what’s the largest canvas I can paint from the front seat, and this view of Katz’s s justified an attempt at something big. By the way, a Katz’s pastrami on rye is $26, but for a normal sized person that’s several meals.
