Icon of the Mother of God “Of the Three Hands” is an Eastern Orthodox wonderworking icon.
According to tradition, the icon was in the possession of John of Damascus and it is associated with his miraculous healing.
While he was serving as Vizier to caliph Al-Walid I, he was falsely accused of treachery and his hand was cut off.
The accusation was, allegedly, made by Byzantine Iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian.
Upon praying in front of an icon of the Theotokos, allegedly, his hand was miraculously restored.
In thankfulness for this healing Saint John placed on the icon a hand fashioned of silver, from which the icon received its name “Of Three Hands.” (two hands of the Theotokos plus one more).
The Three-Handed Theotokos icon is today found in the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, Greece.
