Whetū is a Māori word which means Star! Whetū is sometimes also used when referring to other celestial bodies, for example, comets. The Māori people carefully observed the stars, as they were important indicators of time. Particular stars and star clusters were considered omens of various aspects of life, including crop success¹. One popular whetū in New Zealand is Matariki. Matariki is one of a cluster of many whetū that are not visible all year long. When it first appears before sunrise in the north-eastern sky, this marks the beginning of the Māori new year, which typically falls around mid-June, and is cause for celebration! ¹(Te Kōhure Textbook (Ed. 2): 165-180;)
