According to Orthodox belief, it was created when Jesus pressed a cloth to His face, leaving a miraculous imprint. This image was later sent to King Abgar of Edessa, who was healed upon receiving it. The icon is considered a prototype for all later depictions of Christ’s face and holds a prominent place in Eastern Orthodox iconography.
