A largish painting of Katz’s and the raking mid-day light on Ludlow street. Knowing the light was moving fast and that it would all be in shadow soon (third pic) I went all shorthand; cursory indications of figures, windows and cast shadows. The point of painting from life is, after all, to do something that feels alive. I do have a photo reference if I want to develop it further, but think I’ll err on the side of spontaneity and leave it as is. 18x24 oil on linen, available #newyorkcityscapepainting #katzdelicatessen #newyorkstreetpainting #katzsdelicatessen #ludlowstreetnyc #paintingsofnyc #paintingsofthelowereastside #pleinairpainting #pleinaircityscape #autumninnewyork #newyorkcityscapes #kosherstyle #jewishcuisine
A few days ago the weather was like today, cold and rainy, and I had 3 hours in front of me. Then the parking gods opened up this space. I have always wondered what’s the largest canvas I can paint from the front seat, and this view of Katz’s s justified an attempt at something big. By the way, a Katz’s pastrami on rye is $26, but for a normal sized person that’s several meals.
