The Last Days of the Papaya King. Set off last night on a mission to paint a large night scene of this fine NYC establishment. It’s living out its last decrepit days on the upper east side. 86th street was once a bustling honky-tonk strip, with movie theaters and neon lights. Appropriately, the King is the last standing. With a nod of gratitude to Henri, Sloan, Luks, Marsh et al for the inspiration to go out and paint the city at night. 18x24 oil on linen, available #newyorknocturne #papayakingnyc #Cityscapenocturne #nocturnepainting #nycnightpainting #newyorkrealism #newyorkcityscapepainting #paintingsofnyc#newyorknightscene #nightcityscapepainting #nightpaintings #nycdeli#classicnyc#newyorkstorefronts #nycstorefronts#pleinairpainting
Here’s an oldie, with a story. I painted it from under the 1 train on 10th Avenue, soon after we moved back to New York in 2013. For some reason I was self conscious about setting up behind my easel there. I wanted to be inconspicuous. So I sat on the ground under a streetlamp. I learned that while it can be done, the ground gets really cold and it’s really awkward to try to hold a large-ish canvas between your knees and not get paint all over yourself. I’ve always enjoyed thinking about it when I look at it. I’m sending it off today, hopefully the new owners will find the back-story amusing. Also, now when I set up at night I always use an easel. 16x20 oil on canvas #newyorknocturne #nycnocturne #Cityscapenocturne #nocturnepainting #nycnightpainting #newyorkrealism #newyorkcityscapepainting #paintingsofnyc#newyorknightscene #nightcityscapepainting #nightpaintings #paintingsofinwood#classicnyc#pleinairpaintings #pleinairnightscenes #elevatedsubways
This one isn’t really about anything. Just a study of late autumn light on a grey day in New York, some shapes and colors. 11x14, oil on linen #pleinevoiture #pleinaircarpainting #pleinairnyc #newyorkrealism #abstractcityscape #redandgrey #nyclandscapepainting
