The Last Days of the Papaya King. Set off last night on a mission to paint a large night scene of this fine NYC establishment. It’s living out its last decrepit days on the upper east side. 86th street was once a bustling honky-tonk strip, with movie theaters and neon lights. Appropriately, the King is the last standing. A rainy, bleak November morning - the perfect weather for working in my studio-mobile. It’s self driving, you know. Today it drove itself to the perfect spot, right in front of #russanddaughters on the Lower East Side. After a few hours, I went in for a #bagelwithaschmear. To my surprise and delight I met the 4th generation owner, #nikirussfederman, and we talked about so many things New York, including a wonderful story she told me about that neon sign.
