A largish painting of Katz’s and the raking mid-day light on Ludlow street. Knowing the light was moving fast and that it would all be in shadow soon (third pic) I went all shorthand; cursory indications of figures, windows and cast shadows. The point of painting from life is, after all, to do something that feels alive. The Last Days of the Papaya King. Set off last night on a mission to paint a large night scene of this fine NYC establishment. It’s living out its last decrepit days on the upper east side. 86th street was once a bustling honky-tonk strip, with movie theaters and neon lights. Appropriately, the King is the last standing.
