The Sahasrahara or the crown chakra, is said to be the most subtle chakra in the system, relating to pure consciousness, and it is from this chakra that all the other chakras emanate. It’s the last Chakra. When a yogi is able to raise his/her Kundalinī up to this point, the state of ‘Nirvikalpa Samadhi’ or total bliss is experienced. It is the location of the merging of Kundalini Shakti and the ‘Paramatma’ (the supreme self). By this union, the person attains liberation while living, which is considered in Hinduism, to be the highest experience: an union of the individual with the universe. Sahasrahara chakra is located above ‘Brahma-randhra’, (the cave of Brahma). It is a hole in the crown of the head through which the soul is said to escape at death. In my art, the goddess is seated on ‘Garuda’, the king of eagles. He is a powerful creature in the epics, whose wing flapping can stop the spinning of heaven, earth and hell. He is described to be the vehicle mount of the Hindu god Vishnu. She is merging in spirit with the supreme being, Vishnu and emerging from the heavens.
