Salampasu Vintage African Mask art
Mask of the Salampasu, D.R. Congo 550g 28 cm Rare ceremonial mask related to the society of warriors and initiation rites. Such masks are also displayed at funerals, in connection with the deceased's previous initiations, and in many cases for a fee. The power of some masks is so feared that their name alone can make women and children flee. These masks are characterized by their bulbous foreheads, wide noses, and mouths that reveal cut teeth. Grey-brown, velvety patina, rubbed in places. (The Salampasu form a tribe of the Lulua group and are located between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola east of the Kasai River. They are surrounded on the west and south by Chokwe and Lunda and on the north and east by Kete and Lwalwa.) We ship insured worldwide.
